Matteo Thun, the South Tyrolean architect and designer who was among the founders of Memphis, and Antonio Rodriguez, his partner in their Milan studio, designed a table for Baxter that draws its strength from contrast. Bourgeois pairs a base reminiscent of 19th-century cast-iron columns with a top in soft, contemporary lines. The name evokes a solid, timeless idea of home, where the table remains the center of everyday life.
The sculptural column is made of sandblasted cast iron, a heavy, stable material that carries the top effortlessly. The top is solid ash or Canaletto walnut in a deep anthracite tone, finished with oils and natural substances. Because it is a living material, the wood may shift slightly in tone over time: during the first months it is best to move objects on the surface now and then, as the natural finish reacts to light.
The top has rounded shapes and comes round, oval or rectangular, in five sizes: from 160 × 160 cm for an intimate dining room up to 300 cm long for big gatherings. Its clean line and strong presence make it just as fitting outside the home: in a professional office or a meeting room it becomes an elegant, understated statement table.
A dark top calls for warm seating: Baxter's leather-upholstered Inga chairs sit naturally against the anthracite wood and cast iron. Visit our showroom to see both woods, ash and Canaletto walnut, side by side: the grain really changes the character of the table.
